Profiling Emerging Australian Designers

Alexi Freeman

Alexi Freeman studied fine art – majoring in print – in Tasmania before his interest moved more toward fashion. He started his fashion label in 2006 and has carried his passion for print into his womenswear collections, using this focus on textiles as his unique selling position. Freeman is based in Melbourne and his aesthetic juxtaposes drape and tailoring. Freeman states ‘the Alexi Freeman woman works, plays, and doesn’t have time to get changed in-between’ (Freeman 2007). Prices range from $99 for a T-shirt to $250 for a dress.

Since Grey

Nadiele Kolb launched her label Since Grey in 2005 at Mercedes Benz Start Up in Melbourne. She is passionate about maintaining sustainable design practices and specialises in using beautiful, natural fibres to create tailored women’s garments with a classic and understated aesthetic. Kolb also experiments with creating garments which can be worn in a number of different ways, for example back-to-front and inside-out. Her unique selling position promotes both her multi functional designs and her sustainable practices. Prices for Since Grey garments range from $70 for a tee to $600 for a coat.

Arj Selvam

Arj Selvam studied finance and engineering at the University of Western Australia before beginning his fashion label in 2009. His is known for his avant-garde style and he designs and creates both menswear and womenswear, as well as accessories. Selvam is making a name for himself as he creates tailored designs with a minimalistic aesthetic. His inspiration comes from ‘symbols of Australiana to architecture and the concept of minimalism’ (The West Australian, 2010). Prices for Selvam’s garments range from around $500 for a button down shirt to $2000 for a coat.
